Copper Pipe Manufacturing Process

UPDATED : 2023-05-10

Widely used in applications such as plumbing and ventilation, copper tubing is strong, durable and naturally rust-resistant; since copper is recyclable, it is an environmentally friendly solution for many applications. Although copper pipes have been around for over half a century, many people are unfamiliar with how they are made. In this article, we will explore the manufacturing process of copper pipe.

1. Smelting raw copper

The first step in the copper pipe manufacturing process is to smelt the raw copper. Raw copper is heated to more than 1300 degrees Celsius in a large furnace, and the blister copper changes from solid to liquid.

All untreated copper contains trace impurities such as nickel and zinc. During smelting, these impurities are separated from the copper, and the pure copper is transferred and used to make pipes.

2. Form the pipeline

The next step in the copper tubing manufacturing process is forming. After raw copper is smelted and purified by removing impurities, it is transferred to tubular castings, which are essentially tube-shaped shells, into which molten copper is poured and left to cool.

While still in a liquid state, the molten copper is evenly distributed throughout the casting and, as it cools, hardens to form tubes of the same shape and size as the casting. After this process is complete, workers remove the copper tube from the casting, resulting in crude copper tube.

3. Process copper pipe

The final step in the copper tubing manufacturing process is sizing and finishing cleaning. The copper tube is fed through a series of dies, cut to size, and then cleaned with water or solvents to give it a cleaner finish.

In conclusion

The manufacture of copper tubes is divided into three basic steps: First, the blister copper is smelted in a large furnace. Next, pour it into a casting that has the shape of a tube. After being removed from the casting, it is cut and cleaned, then ready to be shipped and sold.
